What good is a deck if you don’t have a place to dine? I’d begun the process of finding a patio set for the deck, but everything was too expensive or just didn’t feel right. Then, there was a promising table on sale at The Home Depot. When I went back to purchase it, it was gone! So, back to square one. At that moment, I decided I was just going to build a set.
I began looking at Google images for inspiration, and then I ran across a table I really liked here: http://www.thriftyandchic.com/2012/10/diy-outdoor-farmhouse-table.html. I was sold on the look of the table. I liked the design. I didn’t care much for the size or a couple of design elements, but the building blocks were in place. So, on a beautiful Saturday, I built a table.
I wanted to top to look a bit older and rustic and experimented with a finishing idea, which I think turned out stellar! I was super-thrilled with the way it came out.
The bottom and side of the table boards where slathered with Thompson’s and then I spray-painted cheap, $.97 white paint on the top. Once that dried, I attached the boards to the legs. I ran the orbital sander over the paint and edges to expose wood, without removing all of the white paint. A dark walnut stain was lightly added and rubbed in to the wood. Then, a coat of the clear cedar Thompson’s was applied. BOOM! Beautiful.
I’m happy with the way it turned out and am going to build two benches to match. The Emery clan should have many great years of dining out on this beast.
